 Product Description

By Stephen L. Waterhouse

The story of the alumni, staff and family of one small college in New England—Dartmouth College—dominating the development of modern skiing for over 100 years.  This lengthy book is the result of a collaborative effort by many Dartmouth alumni and ski historians to chronicle the contributions of Dartmouth to the sport of skiing.

In North America, Dartmouth College, its three graduate schools and its local community took an early leadership role in the development of modern skiing, a role which continues to this very day. This award winning book (The Ullr Award - 2011 from the International Ski History Association) highlights not only the impact of this community on skiing, but on all things to do with winter from Christmas stories like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and Dr. Seuss's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" to ice skating championships and modern ballets using skis! This book is the basis for a major 80 minute documentary film, "Passion for Snow", being developed for release in late 2012.

However, it is the "Passion for Skiing" that is the center piece with results like having the most members of the National Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame; the founders, developers and designers of most major ski resorts (like Sun Valley, Aspen and Vail); and more Winter Olympians than any other institution, including two medal recipients in 2010 at Vancouver. This book provides extensive detail and amazing personal stories to show how over the past 100 years, the involved students, staff, alumni and local families have been the preeminent developers around the world of ski schools, ski lifts, ski resorts, specialized ski equipment and clothing, new competitive racing events, the Winter Olympics, the 10th Mountain Division, adaptive skiing programs, the Paralympics, ski magazines, ski movies, ski clubs, ski museums, technological innovations, dedicated ski area medical facilities, and other elements of skiing never seen before in the 6000+ year history of sliding over snow.
